President Trump made a promise early April to support legislation with a goal of protecting the marijuana industry in states that have already legalized the drug. The U.S. Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, made a threat against the industry just three months ago, and the President’s promise forebodes a clashing.

In January 2018, Attorney General Sessions made a decision that removed prohibitions that kept federal prosecutors from pursuing cases, based on federal law, against people who were following pot laws in legalized states. Since then, Republican Senator Cory Gardner of Colorado has been pushing to reverse the decision, while accurately stating that the President supported the states on this issue.

Senator Gardner hopes to introduce bipartisan legislation keeping the federal government from interfering with state marijuana markets. Such legislation will likely garner the President’s support.

However, the President has a record of reversing positions, including on this issue by pledging to respect states that legalized marijuana, but at the same time criticizing the legislation implying it should be stopped. Given that, it is normal that marijuana supporters are less uncertain about the future of legalization than Senator Gardner.
